Noam Chomsky | Plutonomy and the Precariat

Noam Chomsky, Op-Ed: For centuries, since the country began, it had been a developing society, and not always in very pretty ways. That's another story, but the general progress was toward wealth, industrialization, development, and hope. There was a pretty constant expectation that it was going to go on like this. That was true even in very dark times. There was a sense that "we're gonna get out of it," even among unemployed people, including a lot of my relatives, a sense that "it will get better." There was militant labor union organizing going on, especially from the CIO (Congress of Industrial Organizations).

ALEC Exempted From Lobbyist Status in Three Separate States

Paul Abowd, News Analysis: "ALEC has deflected the negative press, arguing that the organization provides an educational, non-partisan resource for often understaffed state officials — and is no different from another exempt organization, the National Conference of State Legislatures. As corporations continue to drop their membership, ALEC's press representatives claim they've been unfairly singled out by a left-wing 'intimidation campaign.'"

Mysterious Mitt: 5 Big Issues Romney is Ducking

Igor Volsky, News Report: "On Tuesday, the Republican National Committee's National Hispanic Outreach Director claimed that Mitt Romney's 'still deciding what his position on immigration is,' kicking off a firestorm of criticism from reporters and bloggers wondering how the GOP's presumptive nominee — a man who had been running for office for the last 18 years — had no defined view on immigration."

A Vision of America the Possible

Gus Speth, Op-Ed: "We need a compelling vision for a new future, a vision of a better country—America the Possible—that is still within our power to reach. This article addresses both the envisioning of an attractive future for America and the politics needed to realize it. A future worth having awaits us, if we are willing to struggle and sacrifice for it. It won't come easy, but little that is worth having ever does."

Giving the Well-Performing State its Due

Ana Palacio, Op-Ed: In Asia, China is exposing the fallacy of looking at state capitalism as a competing alternative to liberal capitalism. Approaching them as alternatives is, in fact, little more than an intellectual remnant of the Cold War, much like the concept of "state capitalism" itself. With its remarkable ability to adapt, China is making strides to accommodate the rising power of its markets and people.

CSU Faculty Stage Pickets Across State, Ready to Strike

Kelly Goff , News Report: The pickets come on the heels of the overwhelming 95-percent approval rating by members of an authorization to strike should the last round of bargaining fail. As part of the now 23-month-old contract dispute, the two sides had agreed to return to the bargaining table, but according to the CSU, faculty negotiators walked away from those talks Sunday night. "We're really trying to put pressure on the CSU to work with us," said Phil Klasky, a lecturer in the Department of American Indian Studies at San Francisco State University. "We have invited them to work with us to find more resources."

From Coal to Foreclosures, Bank of America Faces Protest at Shareholders Meeting in Charlotte

Amy Goodman, Video Feature: "Occupy Wall Street protesters, environmental activists, and struggling homeowners are converging in Charlotte today for a protest outside Bank of America's annual shareholder meeting. The protesters are calling attention to the bank's involvement in the financial crisis, its support for the coal industry and its long record of alleged foreclosure abuses. The rally marks a test run for activism targeting September's Democratic National Convention, which will be held in Charlotte."

Trade Alert! Is Another Job-Killing Trade Agreement Heading Our Way?

Dave Johnson, Op-Ed: "It has been leaked that the TPP agreement grants the TPP countries the same privilege. In other words, Buy American in federal procurement will give these countries -- Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam -- the same preferences as American-made goods. The idea is that these countries will then have to give American producers equal access to their own government contracts. Of particular concern is that Chinese-based firms in these countries will be able to bid against American companies for these government contracts."

What follows is a live video stream and live Twitter feed of this event."

Jim Hightower | Agent Orange Corn? Dow and Feds Say: "Bon Appetit!"

Jim Hightower, Op-Ed: "Dow now sells 2,4-D to help kill various weeds, but the herbicide is so strong that it also kills nature's own version of corn plants. Thus, Dow's genetic engineers went into the corporate lab and manufactured a new corn that's immune to the weed-killer. This would let the chemical maker profit from selling the patented seed, plus enjoying a huge increase in sales of its 2,4-D herbicide. How happy for Dow! Not so happy, though, for consumers worried about the untested long-term health consequences of the altered corn and the carcinogenic possibilities of ingesting more 2,4- D."

Target U.S. Foreign Aid More Selectively Amidst Austerity

Jim Lobe, News Analysis: "Given the likely persistence of political pressure to reduce the yawning federal deficit, the United States – whether under President Barack Obama or his presumed Republican challenger, Mitt Romney – must be more selective in its foreign aid program, according to a new report released here Tuesday by two influential think tanks."

40 Acres and a Rule: Draft Federal Fracking Regs Cover Only a Sliver of Land

Lena Groeger, News Analysis: "Last week's media coverage of the Obama administration's newly-proposed fracking rules focused so heavily on how drilling companies would have to disclose the chemicals they use that it largely overlooked the toughest provisions: Drillers would be required to test the physical integrity of their wells, and more water would be protected from drilling. Since many wells fail because the cement and casings crack, the new tests could prevent dangerous leakages."
