Why America's Rich People Are Better Than Everyone Else's

Paul Buchheit , Op-Ed: "A remarkable story appeared in Newsweek recently, a celebration by author Daniel Gross of America's re-emergence as the strongest economy and best darn nation in the world. An underlying theme in the article, implicit in the grandiose descriptions of our post-recession growth, is that all American lives must be improving because of the magic of our 'resilient and nimble private sector.'"

Corporations Win Big in Battle Against Investment Regulation

Isolda Agazzi, News Analysis: "In 2011, Argentina held the record of known cases (51), followed by Venezuela (25), Ecuador (23) and Mexico. Most of the claims against Argentina are related to the 2011 financial crisis and many to the privatization of water. In total, Buenos Aires has been fined more than one billion dollars by multinational corporations. Last year, Ecuador was forced to pay fines of 78 million dollars to the United States' oil company Chevron, which claims that the country's efforts to protect the Amazon from pollution have negatively affected business."

Jim Hightower | Food Stamp Foolishness

Jim Hightower, Op-Ed: "Finally, Ryan asserts that his food stamp cuts are for poor people's own good. Citing his Catholic religion's doctrine of 'social magisterium,' Paul the Pious says he's preventing poor families from the moral horror of being 'dependent on government.' Just imagine their gratitude! And imagine Ryan's embarrassment that the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops dared to contradict his divine rationalization, bluntly calling the cuts 'unjustified and wrong'."

Epistle to the Ecotopians

Ernest Callenbach, Op-Ed: "We have an uneasy and doubting attitude about government, as if we all reserve the right to be outlaws. But of course human society, like ecological webs, is a complex dance of mutual support and restraint, and if we are lucky it operates by laws openly arrived at and approved by the populace. If the teetering structure of corporate domination, with its monetary control of Congress and our other institutions, should collapse of its own greed, and the government is unable to rescue it, we will have to reorganize a government that suits the people."

Chinatown Death Plunge at Age 91 Triggers Worries About Isolated Elders

Summer Chiang, News Report: "Soong-Kwong Yu, 91, emigrated from Guangdong to the United States 30 years ago. Yu's family, including his wife and three children, all live in the Bay Area. "I know living alone can be a high risk, but I have no other choice. I came here to reunite with my family but, ironically, they did not treat me well when I came. They kicked me out because I earned too little money," Yu said. Yu has lived in a small room of an old Chinatown building since 1979. He receives 50-60 hours of home assistance from IHSS every month."

Robert Reich | The Answer Isn't Socialism; It's Capitalism that Better Spreads the Benefits of the Productivity Revolution

Robert Reich, Op-Ed: "Socialism isn't the answer to the basic problem haunting all rich nations. The answer is to reform capitalism. The world's productivity revolution is outpacing the political will of rich societies to fairly distribute its benefits. The result is widening inequality coupled with slow growth and stubbornly high unemployment."

Los Angeles Students Protest School Police Citations That Hit Blacks, Latinos

Susan Ferriss, News Report: "Ticketed students said they had sometimes overslept or arrived on late buses and were only tardy by minutes. They complained they missed more school time while police handcuffed and searched some of them. The police sweeps were concentrated at low-income schools; students were summoned to court — missing more school — and faced fines of more than $250."

Wealthy of the World, Unite — and Party!

Sam Pizzigati, Op-Ed: "Since 2008, U.S. tax officials have been endeavoring to clamp down more firmly on overseas tax evasion. Swiss private banks, for instance, have come under new pressure to divulge data on the millions wealthy Americans have stuffed in secret accounts. That pressure has some of those wealthy irritated enough to renounce their ties to Uncle Sam."

After Austerity

Joseph E. Stiglitz, Op-Ed: "There are alternative strategies. Some countries, like Germany, have room for fiscal maneuver. Using it for investment would enhance long-term growth, with positive spillovers to the rest of Europe. A long-recognized principle is that balanced expansion of taxes and spending stimulates the economy; if the program is well designed (taxes at the top, combined with spending on education), the increase in GDP and employment can be significant."
