$800 Million Tar Sands Oil Spill Blamed on Corporate Neglect and 'Weak Federal Regulations'

Stephen Lacey, News Report: "Corn prices soared toward new highs on Monday amid growing fears that the drought scorching the U.S. Midwest will prove to be the harshest in decades. Climate change researchers have been able to attribute recent examples of extreme weather to the effects of human activity on the planet's climate systems for the first time, marking a major step forward in climate research."

The Audacity of Acting Out: What Our Kids Can Teach Us

Shannon Hayes, Op-Ed: "I delivered a keynote presentation at an organic farming conference this past winter. Before I took the podium, the state secretary of agriculture gave the opening address. In it, he stood before an auditorium packed with organic farmers and told them that if they wanted to have success with their conference that day, and with their businesses in the future, then the first thing they needed to learn was that they should never speak ill of or publicly criticize the conventional food system."

As Evidence Mounts, DC Insiders Worry About Holder's Inaction on Wall Street Crime

Richard (RJ) Eskow, Op-Ed: Political insiders are fearful that this obstruction will threaten Democrats' chances at the polls. Meanwhile the scandals and revelations go on. The new LIBOR rate-fixing scandal led the bank-friendly and conservative magazine The Economist to run a cover about "Banksters" and to publish a piece entitled "The rotten heart of finance." People like Robert Reich are saying this could be the story that finally brings down the banks.

Global Warming Tied to Risk of Weather Extremes

News Analysis: "In the Texas analysis, researchers at Oregon State University and in England noted that the state suffered through record heat last year. It happened during a La Nina weather pattern, the flip side of El Nino. Caused by the cooling of the central Pacific Ocean, La Nina generally cools global temperatures but would be expected to make the southern United States warmer and drier than usual."

Poor Sales, Not High Wages, Worry Small Businesses

Eric Hoyt , News Analysis: As the following figure shows, while exhibiting expected small random fluctuations, the percentage of firms reporting labor costs as their major concern has shown no upward trend, despite minimum wage hikes both in July 2008 and July 2009. While we do see a slight spike to 6% of firms in June 2009, perhaps reflecting increased attention and media hype over the approaching minimum wage hike, the share of firms citing labor costs as their most serious problem abruptly fell back to 3% in July when the policy was actually enacted.

Corporate Exodus Continues From ALEC as Secretive Right-Wing Group's Policies Come to Light

Amy Goodman, Video Report: "Five more corporations have severed ties with the secretive right-wing American Legislative Exchange Council, known as ALEC. The group has come under increasing scrutiny in recent months as the public has become aware of its role in advancing the 'Stand Your Ground' gun law initially cited to protect Trayvon Martin's killer in Florida. The organization has pushed voter suppression bills, union-busting policies and other controversial legislation. The future of ALEC is now more precarious than ever before."

The Last War Crime' Debuts at Cannes--but Censored in US.

Jeanine Molloff, Op-Ed: The people who committed these war crimes believe they can escape accountability by changing the way people think, by selling the American people on the idea that torture was a great thing that got us wonderful intelligence to protect us. But the only people making these arguments are the torturers themselves and their propaganda advocates. All other percipient witnesses confirm the opposite, which we knew already, that torture does not even work, and that any actionable intelligence they got was obtained before they started torturing people.

Robert Reich | The Truth About Obama's Tax Proposal

Robert Reich, Op-Ed: Congress's Joint Tax Committee estimates that in 2013 about 940,000 taxpayers would have enough business income to break through the $250,000 ceiling – and, again, they'd pay additional taxes only on dollars earned above $250,000. All told, fewer than 3 percent of small business owners would even reach the $250,000 threshold. A third lie is Obama's proposal will "increase uncertainly and further retard investment and job creation," as the Journal puts it.

Jim Hightower | The GMO Machine: Beware of the "Tomato Tamperers"

Jim Hightower, Op-Ed: "Take the tomato, truly a natural wonder. Agribusiness profiteers, however, wanted it to do unnatural things, so — voila! — the genetic tamperers in the 1960s and '70s dutifully produced the Amazing Industrial Tomato. It's a techno-marvel made to endure long-distance shipping, be harvested while green and then artificially ripened to appear tomato-y red and last an ungodly amount of time without rotting."

Froma Harrop | Where They Play, Rich Conservatives Like Zoning

Froma Harrop, Op-Ed: "The region's choice corners are chock-a-block with rich Democrats, too, but it is politically their natural habitat. Why do conservatives from elsewhere hang out in places that tax and regulate and do all kinds of other mean things to rich people like themselves? The reason is that these are nice places, and they are that way precisely because they tax and regulate. And these guys know it. If cooler summers were all they craved, they'd be partying in Upper Wisconsin."

Protests Rising Within China

Clarissa Sebag-Montefiore, News Report: The rapid rise of social media has played a significant role in growing civic awareness among the populace. China's micro-blogs have helped inspire large gatherings of protestors. Users, many who were born in the post-1990s and are well-educated, have quickly spread details and images of protests around the country, forcing the hand of the government. ast week, the word "Shifang" (which the government did not block online) was the most widely searched term on China's micro-blogs.
