Politicians say a lot of stupid things to validate their policy ideas. But Alabama State Senator McGill's comments about teacher pay might be the craziest. According to McGill, we should keep teacher pay low because it's a "biblical principle." »

Sound too shocking to be true? Here's his quote: "If you double teacher's pay scale, you'll attract people who aren't called to teach." In Alabama, the starting teacher's salary is a paltry $36,144.

Is there any other profession where you wouldn't want to pay people for doing a hard job and doing it well? There are plenty of teachers out there who would call their career choice a "calling." But that doesn't mean they don't deserve to get paid a decent salary.

Oh, and to top it off, despite being in public service -- a profession that arguably falls under that "calling" category -- McGill had no problem voting to increase his own salary as a part-time legislator 65 percent to $49,500.

We need to stop allowing our public officials to degrade and devalue teachers. Tell Alabama State Senator McGill that teachers deserve great pay »
