The Big Story, By Joe Conason
Biography inspires many a presidential campaign, but exploiting the candidate's life story is never without risk. While Rick Santorum uses his coal-mining roots to draw a striking contrast with the awkward one-percenter Mitt Romney, he can hardly claim to be the tribune of the working class. Indeed, he insists that "there are no classes in America" and accused Romney of indulging in "class warfare" merely for mentioning the "middle class." He boasts of his low ratings from labor and vows to outlaw public employee unions.

Playing the class card while denying the existence of class isn't necessarily Santorum's most troubling contradiction. For him the real risk is that voters will see beyond his proletarian posturing and learn how he joined the one percent -- as a standard-issue Capitol Hill grifter, who sold legislative favors for cash and then became an influence peddler for Wall Street interests. Occupy The SEC, a small group of activists, is now chasing down Wall Street into the obscure rabbit warrens where they make their money, filing an official 325-page comment on how the Volcker Rule -- which would limit the ability of investment banks to make risky bets -- should be implemented. I was most impressed with the point-by-point, aggressive answering of the regulators' questions: the stuff that can make a difference. READ MORE

Where are the tributes to the real heroes, they ask, many citing the men and women of our military who have given their lives in service to their country. What a hollow reprimand. As if Houston were intruding on a collective consciousness that actually exists. READ MORE

From Warren Buffett's secretary to Mitt Romney's tax returns to the general uprising against the one percent, tax reform is on everybody's radar. In the cross-hairs is the preferential treatment for capital gains. Meaningful reform of the capital-gains tax is a good idea. Let's make the change logical and effective as well. READ MORE

Money
General Motors reported on Thursday earning its largest profit ever in 2011, two years after the company nearly collapsed, while Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney doubled down on his opposition to the 2009 auto bailout in a Michigan campaign swing. Strong sales in the U.S. and China helped the 103-year-old carmaker turn a profit of $7.6 billion, beating its 1997 record of $6.7 billion during the pickup truck boom. The government still owns 26.5 percent of the company and is waiting for share prices to rise before selling to recoup the bailout money. READ MORE

Capitol Hill
"Where are the women?" House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi asked when the hearing was brought up at a news conference. "The Republican leadership of this Congress thinks it's appropriate to have a hearing on women's health and purposely exclude women from the panel," she said. "I may at some point be moved to explain biology to my colleagues." READ MORE
