Candice Bernd, Ron Seifert and Will Wooten, News Report: "Blocking the Gulf Coast Segment with human bodies is not going to be easy. Fortunately, the campaign's momentum has been building for years, as demonstrated by the overwhelming response to the launch of the Tar Sands Blockade website and the popularity of our Twitter and Facebook postings. Some of that support comes from the landmark sit-in action at the White House that took place in 2011, followed weeks later by an enormous rally in Washington, D.C. That event provided a groundswell of energy and a network of participants eager to take the next steps." 
Caleb Jacobo, Op-Ed: "Why is it important for educators to communicate the reason for reading? Because literature, and the act of reading it, teaches us more about ourselves, about the human condition, about life, then we could ever learn in school. For example, Shakespeare's ability to read you more than you can read him, and teach you things about yourself you didn't know existed is remarkable. You can read Hamlet or Othello every year, and have new emotional experiences with the text each time." 
Robert Reich, Op-Ed: In early August, "Americans for Prosperity," one of the nonprofit front groups masquerading as a charity, and founded in part by billionaire right-wingers Charles and David Koch, bought some $27 million in ad time on spots now airing in eleven swing states. So Romney's lying machine is working. But what does all this tell us about the man who is running this lying machine? 
Travis Waldron, News Report: Romney held a direct investment in Sensata through one fund titled "Bain Capital Fund IX, L.P.," dated December 31, 2009, meaning he has likely financially benefited from Bain's ownership of the company in the past, and could benefit from the plant's closure and the outsourcing of the jobs to China. According to his 2011 personal financial disclosure, Romney still holds the Bain Capital fund that contains the Sensata investment. 
John Dunbar and Michael Beckel, News Analysis: After details of the apparent deal appeared in the press, Republicans tried to save face and moved the convention from San Diego to Miami Beach. The scandal prompted Congress to enact a new law that would provide taxpayer funding for the parties' conventions, thus removing the need for private contributions — in theory, anyway. For 2012, each party has received $18.2 million from the U.S. Treasury to help defray costs. 
Amy Goodman, Video Report: "This is his nightmare. And he was doing everything he could to pull the plug immediately. He instantly went on the air with the clip you just saw. And those were brutal words. Those are coming not just from a political commentator, that is the party boss pulling the plug, saying, 'You're not getting another dime from us. Get out.' And Akin did not get out. So, we'll have to see how that plays out." 
Terrance Heath, Op-Ed: "This artificial nature retreat mirrored the moral values associated with natural simplicity and virtue...The innocence and simplicity of Marie Antoinette's amusements did not, however, redeem her in the eyes of those who noted the expenses of her endeavors. And even more than the money spent on the Petit Hameau, the many hours the Queen spent there in the company of other women, outside the sight and supervision of her husband, gave rise to rumors that were not innocent at all." 
Jake Bernstein , News Analysis: "Federal prosecutors in Rhode Island and insurance companies paint a very different picture of Caramadre: They say he's an unscrupulous con artist who engaged in identity theft, conspiracy and two different kinds of fraud. Prosecutors contend he deceived the terminally ill to make millions for himself and his clients. For them, Caramadre's can't-miss investment strategy was an illusion in which he preyed on the sick and vulnerable." 
Froma Harrop, Op-Ed: On the matter of pregnancies caused by rape, even staunch foes of abortion may leave a bit of weasel room. Like Akin, Republicans in the Indiana House opposed an exception for rape on the basis that women wanting an abortion would lie about having been forced. Indiana State Rep. Eric Turner called it a "giant loophole." If Turner was implying that abortions would be permissible if a rape could be fully proved, he too was not being coherent. For those who truly walk the walk, the circumstances behind the conception should not matter. 
Andrew Lam, News Report: "The United States has less than 5 percent of the world's population, yet it consumes more than 30 percent of the world's energy resources and generates 70 percent of total global toxic waste. We are throwing away away up to 40% of our food, the research finds. That is estimated to be around $165 billion in wasted food each year. Even if we suffer from a long drawn-out recession, the average family of four winds up throwing out as much as $2,200 worth of food a year." --
