Amy Goodman, Op-Ed: "As the election season heats up, an increasing number of states are working to limit the number of people who are allowed to vote. Already we have a shamefully low percentage of those eligible to vote actually participating. Florida, a key swing state, is preparing for the Republican National Convention, five days of pomp promoted as a celebration of democracy."
Carey L. Biron, News Report: "Countering a two-year trend, the world overall became slightly more peaceful over the past year, according to an annual report released here on Tuesday. The United States, however, moved down seven places to 88 out of 158, a "fairly low rank (that) largely reflects much higher levels of militarisation and involvement in external conflicts", according to the Global Peace Index(GPI) 2012."
Nick Turse, Op-Ed: "History demonstrates that the U.S. is not very good at winning wars, having gone without victory in any major conflict since 1945. Smaller interventions have been a mixed bag with modest victories in places like Panama and Grenada and ignominious outcomes in Lebanon (in the 1980s) and Somalia (in the 1990s), to name a few."
Pat Garofalo, News Report: "Mexican telecom mogul Carlos Slim, who is the world's richest manwith a fortune of $65 billion, believes that struggling countries need to raise their retirement age to 70 in order to help fix their finances: Countries should have people work until they are older to reflect longer life expectancy rates, Slim reportedly said…Slim added the current retirement age was established "when jobs were more physical and people died at 60, but now we live until 85 or 90."
Dean Baker, Op-Ed: "The Federal Reserve Board's newly released triennial Survey of Consumer Finance (SCF) confirmed what most of us already knew: The middle class has taken a really big hit. It showed that between the 2007 survey and the 2010 survey, the typical family had lost 38.8 percent of their wealth. In fact, the wealth of the typical family was down 27.1 percent from where it had been a decade ago in 2001."
Research: A recent Federal Reserve study found that the wealth gap increased during the recent recession with the median net worth of the wealthiest Americans increasing between 2007 and 2010, while the median net worth for all Americans decreased. But right-wing media have ignored or misrepresented this aspect of the report in order to attack President Obama.
Robert Reich, Video Report: "Three reasons why taxes have to be raised on the richest Americans: 1. We have budget deficits. If the rich don't pay their fair share than the rest of us will either have to do with less Medicare and Medicaid, fewer public investments, infrastructure and education. Or we will have to pay even more in taxes to make up for what the rich do not pay. 2. Top tax rate is at historic lows. Because so much of their income is in the form of capital gains, the very wealthy pay far less. 3. The rich can afford to pay more. The wealthy are taking home a larger share of total income than they have in 80 years."
Dani Rodrik, Op-Ed: "Consider the following scenario. After a victory by the left-wing Syriza party, Greece's new government announces that it wants to renegotiate the terms of its agreement with the International Monetary Fund and the European Union. German Chancellor Angela Merkel sticks to her guns and says that Greece must abide by the existing conditions."
Zach Toombs, News Report: "As the U.S. military heads for the door in Afghanistan, one of its most important tasks is to train Afghan police to take control of the nation's security. But a billion-dollar Afghan police training contract, now being administered by the Army, has encountered some troubles, according to a new report by the Defense Department's Inspector General's office."
Thomas Magstadt, Op-Ed: "Late this summer, August 27-30, the world will once again be treated to the spectacle of a Republic National Convention. It's only fitting that this one will be held in Tampa, Florida, the state that made it possible for George W. Bush to steal the election in 2000. The convention is a sure bet to be a theater of the absurd, but this year the candidate it anoints and the speeches that sing his praises will highlight the hypocrisy of the new Grand Old Party like never before."
Harold Simon, John Emmeus Davis and Miriam Pemberton, News Analysis: "The story of the Sawmill neighborhood, one of the oldest Latino neighborhoods in Albuquerque, is a familiar one. Sawmill was, for a long time, among the city's most affordable places to live. But it is also within walking distance of the downtown business district and adjacent to the historic Old Town area, a major New Mexico tourist attraction. In the early 1990s, a wave of property investment swept through Sawmill, which included development of a huge retail plaza, luxury condominiums, and a hotel convention complex."
George Lakey, Op-Ed: "Billionaire businessman Warren Buffett reminded us in his 2006 interview withThe New York Times, "There's class warfare, all right, but it's my class, the rich class, that's making war, and we're winning." This year, the Koch Brothers and others decided that Wisconsin should be one of the battleground states for escalating the class struggle."
Justin Elliott, News Report: "A group of broadcasters are formally asking the Federal Communications Commission to soften a new rule requiring TV stations to put political ad data on the Internet. Washington attorneys for a group of twelve companies filed a petition for reconsideration of the rule, which was approved by the FCC in April and requires online disclosure about political ad purchases by campaigns and outside groups like super PACs."
The U.S. elections in November will be contested against the backdrop of an economy growing more slowly and creating fewer jobs than thought only a month ago.
