Political Advertisements Advance the Media's Profits

Lee Woodsmall, News Analysis: While such records are currently made public, they are kept in paper form at each station, essentially making them inaccessible. With limited airtime available for campaign ads in an election year, many groups are vying for the position of having their ads reach the largest media markets in highly contested political races. Thus, as competition increases, the cost of advertising also increases, and it is no surprise that NAB supported this style of political campaigning.

Robert Reich | The Ryan Choice

Robert Reich, Op-Ed: Ryan's views are pure social Darwinism. As William Graham Sumner, the progenitor of social Darwinism in America, put it in the 1880s: "Civilization has a simple choice." It's either "liberty, inequality, survival of the fittest" or "not-liberty, equality, survival of the unfittest. The former carries society forward and favors all its best members; the latter carries society downwards and favors all its worst members."

Will Chevron Ever Come Clean?

Michael Brune, Op-Ed: To add insult to injury, now Chevron and its apologists have tried to blame its problems on community members who stopped an expansion of the massive refinery. But the Sierra Club, and the refinery workers whom we collaborate with through the BlueGreen Alliance, know that the only thing standing in the way of safety improvements at the Richmond refinery is Chevron itself.

Robert S. Becker | Three Cheers for Mitt's Yankee Tax Shrewdness

Robert S. Becker, Op-Ed: Who disagrees the bedrock of American exceptionalism boils down to two absolutes: when self-interest's at stake, the noble individual defies the system. Second, tribal, if not Biblical mandates that healthy self-interest unearths every tax advantage with religious fervor. That's it, the double money root behind America, the two great secular commandments: all else is commentary, or worse, the babble of liberal nonsense.

Chevron Oil Refinery Fire in Richmond, California Forces Over 900 Residents to Hospitals

Amy Goodman, Video Report: "Chevron occupies over 13% of Richmond's land, and according to the California Air Resources Board, emits more greenhouse gas pollution than any other facility in California. Many who grew up in the refinery's shadow have memories of illnesses caused by spills. Community activists have also accused Chevron of using its local economic clout to minimize taxes and skirt environmental regulations. Chevron, however, says it is a good neighbor that bolsters the economy of Richmond and its surroundings."

Diversity of Tactics and the 1 Percent

George Lakey, Op-Ed: The Egypt we saw on television last year was in stage four, with its massive occupations and strikes and boycotts and demonstrations around the country. Stage four is when Occupy Wall Street organizers could call a general strike on May Day and actually get a response! Stage four is also when, as in the Egyptian case, property destruction and some actual violence is less likely to slow the movement; the basic population shift has been made and the momentum is already enormous.

Dean Baker | The Fed, Ben Bernanke, and the Rotten Libor

Dean Baker, Op-Ed: It is not just the Libor scandal that shows the bad effects of central banker clubbiness. Bernanke has recently committed the Fed to a policy of targeting a 2.0 percent inflation rate. The basis for this targeting is seen as the congressional mandate for the Fed to pursue a policy of promoting price stability. Of course that is only half of the Fed's mandate; the other half is to pursue a policy of promoting full employment.

What follows is a live video stream and live Twitter feed of this event."

Oil Companies Failing to Adequately Disclose Drilling Risks to SEC and Investors

Ben Bovarnick, News Report: Despite the high risk of operating in the extreme and unpredictable environment, Royal Dutch Shell is preparing to drill exploratory wells off the coast of Alaska's North Slope this summer. While drilling will occur in shallower water than the Gulf of Mexico, the harsh conditions — coupled with a stark absence of infrastructure throughout the region — would significantly complicate any major oil spill response effort.

Man Links Wife's Cancer Death to Bain Buyout

Alexandra Duszak, News Report: When the man's wife finally went to the hospital, he says, it was too late — she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and died 22 days later. Priorities USA Action reported spending almost $1.3 million on an anti-Romney television advertising buy in its most recent independent expenditure report to the Federal Election Commission. It is not certain whether or not the expenditure is tied directly to the ad.

Groups File Clean Water Act Suit to Force EPA to Regulate Oil Spill Dispersants

News Report: "The Clean Water Act requirements have been in place for decades, but administration after administration has failed to comply with the law," said Cyn Sarthou, executive director of Gulf Restoration Network. "Consequently there was little data available to EPA officials when they were confronted with the devastating BP oil disaster." The Clean Water Act requires the U.S. EPA to identify the waters in which dispersants and other spill mitigating devices and substances may be used, and what quantities can be used safely in the identified waters, as part of EPA's responsibilities for preparing and publishing the National Contingency Plan.
