Privatization: The Big Joke That Isn't Funny

Paul Buchheit , Op-Ed: As summarized by the UN's International Policy Centre, "Privatization has failed on several counts...the focus of investors on cost recovery has not promoted social objectives, such as reducing poverty and promoting equity." Policy Dialogue adds the reminder that the most prosperous countries in recent years - China, India Vietnam - have relied on millions of small enterprises rather than a large-scale privatization policy.

The Real Train Wreck: ALEC and "Other ALECs" Attack EPA Regulations

Steve Horn, News Analysis: As it turns out, one of the "ther ALECs," or a group that operates in a similar manner to ALEC, will be hosting its conference in the immediate aftermath of ALEC's conference: the Council of State Government's (CSG) regional offshoot, the Southern Leadership Conference (SLC). Like ALEC, CSG produces its own "model bills," which it calls "Suggested State Legislation" (SSL). SSL is enacted via an "up or down" vote manner at CSG's national meetings.

Police Shootings Echo Nationwide

Stephan Salisbury, Op-Ed: "Neighborhood residents gathered on lawns along the street, upset at what had happened near their homes, upset at what has been occurring repeatedly in Anaheim. Then, police, seeking to disperse the crowd, began firing what appeared to be rubber bullets and bean bag rounds directly at those women and children, among others. Screaming chaos ensued. A police dog was unleashed and lunged for a toddler in a stroller."

Jim Hightower | How Mitt Got His

Jim Hightower, Op-Ed: The "how" has now been well documented: Romney's corporate takeover outfit, Bain Capital, practiced the hocus-pocus of legalized Wall Street robbery known as private equity deals. Bain continues to put millions in Mitt's pocket, even as it has bankrupted companies, cut thousands of jobs, and slashed workers' pay. But where did he put his booty?

Ireland Allows Iconic Potato to be Genetically Modified

Anthony Gucciardi, News Report: "It is only a two hectare trial, but that's like saying you're only a little bit pregnant, there are no grey areas with GM…. Organic Trust calls on Teagasc not to act on the approval granted but to adhere to the wishes of the vast majority of Irish citizens not to pollute our precious land. Not one single solitary benefit will accrue to Ireland as a result of this trial. So why it is going ahead?"

The Berlin Patient: Timothy Ray Brown Speaks Out on Being First Man "Cured" of HIV

Amy Goodman, Video Report: Timothy Ray Brown, known in the medical world as the "Berlin Patient." He is the first person believed to have been cured of HIV. A decade later he was diagnosed with leukemia as well. Living in Berlin at the time, Brown was treated by a German doctor named Gero Hütter who devised an experimental treatment to cure both the HIV and the leukemia.

Robert Reich | The Terrible Economy and the Anti-Election of 2012

Robert Reich, Op-Ed: Mitt Romney is playing it even more cautiously. His economic plan is really a non-plan: more tax cuts for the rich, undefined spending cuts, and no details about how he'd bring down the budget deficit. No presidential candidate since Herbert Hoover in 1928 has been more vague about what he'd do on the critical issues facing the nation. Romney's advisors assume Obama can't possibly be reelected with the economy this bad.

Predatory For-Profit Colleges Pay Executives Based on Corporate Profitability, Not Student Outcomes

Pat Garofalo, News Analysis: "As discussed below, some companies provided no documents demonstrating links to student achievement when determining executive compensation, other companies provided documents with vague references to student achievement, and other companies provided documents that included specific compensation percentages linked to student performance measures."

The "Let's Cut Taxes for Mitt Romney and His Heirs" Bill

Bill Scher, Op-Ed: If Romney had to pay higher income taxes, then he wouldn't bother investing in the innovative new ideas that grow the economy. If he can't give his children all of his accumulated wealth without them having to earn it, then he wouldn't have any interest in succeeding in the first place. The funny thing is: while Republicans love talking about "job creators" and "death taxes," they don't seem very interested in using the perfect example of Mitt Romney to make their case.
