Robert Reich | Paul Ryan's Faux Populism

Robert Reich, Op-Ed: The U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles, meanwhile, is investigating whether the Sands Corporation violated federal money-laundering laws by accepting more than $100 million from high-rolling gamblers accused of drug trafficking and embezzlement, rather than reporting the suspicious funds to the government. Ryan has also been a major recipient of contributions from billionaire energy moguls Charles and David Koch.

Voting Rights Battles Re-Emerge in the South

Kassondra Cloos, News Analysis: "In November, five states — Georgia, Indiana, Tennessee, Kansas and Pennsylvania — will vote under new strict photo voter ID laws. A judge soon could decide whether the Pennsylvania law violates the state constitution, as voting rights advocates claim. Supporters argue the laws are important protections against in-person voter impersonation fraud, but civil rights organizations and election historians see evidence of a more sinister legacy."

Early Bain-Ization - How a Few Got Rich Illegally Suppressing Unions

Dave Johnson, Op-Ed: "Private equity companies cut costs. If you are not rich and have to work for a living, you are one of those 'costs' that has to be cut. Your pay or your job are in the way of someone making a whole lot of money. Another 'cost' to cut is the work environment. Worker safety can cost money, so it is one more thing that is in the way of someone making a whole lot of money."

U.S. Breaks Silence on Bahrain Crackdown

Zoha Arshad, News Analysis: Reporters without Borders also ranked Bahrain 173rd in its freedom of speech index. Since February 2011, bloggers, journalists and human rights activists have been arrested and thrown into jail on trumped up charges of "inciting hatred", "promoting sectarianism", "disseminating false news" and "calling for the regime's overthrow in online forums". Last year, a military court sentenced 21 human rights activists to lengthy terms in prison. Amidst this chaos, Rajab is on the front lines.

Monsanto Dishes Out 4.2 Million to Squash California GMO Labeling Initiative

Anthony Gucciardi, News Analysis: "Whether its censoring research on their GM products, ignoring evidence that links the engineered crops to serious biological and environmental damage, or managing 'slave-like' workers on their corn fields for withheld pay, Monsanto has continually shown its true allegiance does not lie with the citizens of the world. The biotech giant has already made several moves to crush GMO labeling initiatives in the past."

Dont Tread on Corporate

Stephen Pitt, Cartoon: Stephen Pitt is NationofChange's art director. Stephen is a southern California artist whose work focuses on matters political, social, and economic. In 2004 Stephen began drawing and painting political imagery to communicate his sincere displeasure with disturbing changes set in motion by ideologues acting in bad faith. With a background in figurative drawing and respect for color, Stephen traded the 6B pencil for a digital stylus and went to work. Published by the San Francisco Chronicle and Z Magazine, Stephen's work has since been seen on Truthout and Firedoglake.

Helicopter Noise

Karl Grossman, Op-Ed: East Hampton Town Councilwoman Theresa Quigley at this meeting acknowledged that "people come here for the peace and tranquility" and aircraft noise "interferes with that tranquility." But, she added, so do "cars and busses." Wolf criticized the comparison because the aircraft traffic to and from town-owned East Hampton Airport involves a tiny minority making use of a transportation mode unaffordable by most and victimizing the Long Island populace with noise in the process.

Ohio Secretary of State Removes Democratic Members of Election Board for Supporting Weekend Voting

Judd Legum, News Report: "In a dramatic move, Ohio Secretary of State John Husted immediately suspended two Democrats on a county election board after they voted to allow weekend voting. Earlier, Husted issued a directive canceling weekend voting statewide. In 2008, Ohio offered early voting on the weekends and thousands of voters cast their ballot during that time. Husted issued an ultimatum to Dennis Lieberman and Tom Ritchie Sr., members of the Montgomery County Eleciton Board, to withdraw their resolution to maintain weekend hours or face suspension."

We Don't Need No Bloody Treaties: Britain Blows a Fuse over Ecuador's Asylum Grant to Wikileaks' Assange

Dave Lindorff, Op-Ed: "What this astonishing incendiary reaction by the British Foreign Office to Assange's grant of asylum by Ecuador makes abundantly clear is that Assange and his Wikileaks organization are truly feared by Britain and the U.S. His organization's ability to expose the war crimes, the war criminals, and the international treachery of these two countries and their allies around the world is one of the biggest threats they face, and they are proving it by their desperate efforts to neutralize or eliminate him."
