Paul Buchheit , Op-Ed: Republicans in Congress, by relying on questionable filibuster rules and delay tactics, have built a "road to gridlock" in the halls of our government. They have been even less productive than the "do-nothing" Congress of Harry Truman. As observed by George Lakoff and Elisabeth Wehling, their recalcitrance "disables the government to the point where it can no longer carry out its moral mission -- the protection and empowerment of everyone equally."

Romney: Federal Reserve Should not Enact New Measures to Boost the Economy

Pat Garofalo, News Report: Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said in a speech today that, "even though some key aggregate metrics — including consumer spending, disposable income, household net worth, and debt service payments–have moved in the direction of recovery, it is clear that many individuals and households continue to struggle with difficult economic and financial conditions." But still, the Fed is standing pat.

Happy 151st Birthday, Federal Income Tax!

Richard (RJ) Eskow, Op-Ed: Congress imposed an income tax in 1894, but the Supreme Court decided it didn't have the authority to do so. So in 1909 a conservative Republican President, William Howard Taft, convened a special session of Congress to give it that authority. The 16th Amendment was finally ratified in 1913, when an income tax was signed into law by a Democratic President, Woodrow Wilson.

Sunita Sohrabji, News Report: Wisconsin's Gov. Scott Walker immediately issued a statement: "While the situation in Oak Creek continues to develop rapidly, we are working with the FBI and local law enforcement. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families, as we all struggle to comprehend the evil that begets this terrible violence." India's Ambassador to the United States, Nirupama Rao, called the shootings a "tragic incident." She described Sikhs as hard working and generous.

Karl Grossman, Op-Ed: The World Nuclear Association describes itself as "representing the people and organizations of the global nuclear profession." World Nuclear News says it "is supported administratively and with technical advice by the World Nuclear Association and is based within its London Secretariat." Its July 27th dispatch noted that the Curiosity rover that landed on August 6th, is "powered by a large radioisotope thermal generator instead of solar cells" as previous NASA Mars rovers had been.
