Paul Buchheit , Op-Ed: Not many would accept the claim by Milwaukee's charter school advocates that playgrounds "significantly limit parent's educational choice in Milwaukee." Nor would they tolerate a school system with one counselor for every 800 students, as in California. Or a school without a full-time arts or music teacher, especially after a College Entrance Examination Board study found that students participating in public school music programs scored an average of 107 points higher on the SAT. But 42% of Chicago's schools are not funded for a full-time arts or music teacher. 
Dr. Mercola, News Analysis: Generational gene transfer is yet another issue. A frequent claim has been that new genes introduced in GE foods are harmless, as they would theoretically be broken up in the intestines. But researchers have now discovered that genes can be transferred through the intestinal wall into your blood. GE crop genes have been found in sufficiently large amounts in human blood, muscle tissue and liver to be identified.8 And the biological impact – especially the generational impact – of this gene transfer is completely unknown, and cannot be known for at least a human generation or two. 
Mark Dempsey, Op-Ed: "Nevertheless, only government protects us, however poorly, from the attacks of a predatory investor class, ready to re-emerge and persecute those too vulnerable to protect themselves. And only the government can spend without creating something like family debt to expand the economy when the private sector is reducing spending to pay off its debts. This is true, because government can create money out of nothing." 
Blair Hickman and Cora Currier, News Report: On May 1, 2012, Obama signed a strategic partnership with Afghan president Hamid Karzai, giving broad terms for the U.S. presence in Afghanistan after 2014. It includes a pledge for a decade of help for the Afghan economy and institutions, but doesn't give dollar figures. Similarly, Romney has said the U.S. mission should be to leave Afghanistan capable of defending itself against the Taliban, "ensure that [it] will never again become a launching pad for terror," and, as he said in a January debate, to hand "Afghanistan and its sovereignty over to a military of Afghan descent." 
Tom Engelhardt, Op-Ed: In such a potentially tumultuous situation, the president and his people are committed to a perilous high-wire act without a net. It involves bringing to bear all the power and savvy left to the last superpower on Earth to prevent some part of the world from spinning embarrassingly out of control, lest the president's opponent be handed a delectable "October surprise." 
Joan Donovan, News Analysis: "Unions in the region, a traditional stronghold, can use the help. In just two years, labor has been battered by the failed recall effort in Wisconsin and an anti-union right-to-work law in Indiana. Right-to-work laws have stifled union membership in 23 states, mostly in the South. They allow individual employees at organized workplaces to forego membership in, and dues to, the unions that represent them." 
Amy Goodman, Video Report: Amidst a U.S. election campaign that has seen the issue of women's rights at the forefront, the playwright and activist Eve Ensler is launching a global strike to end violence against women. "One Billion Rising" calls on women "and the men who love them" to join together on Feb. 14, 2013, and "dance until the violence stops." Ensler is the award-winning playwright and creator of "The Vagina Monologues," and her latest play, "Emotional Creature," opens in New York City in November. 
Jim Hightower, Op-Ed: "Why should anyone surrender their privacy just to see a movie? Yes, we essentially get strip searched to board an airplane these days — but even that's of very dubious value, and at least it's done by trained security personnel. What's a 17-year-old, low-wage, untrained corporate hire going to do if he or she pokes into a purse and finds a Ruger Semiautomatic? Shriek?" 
Rebecca Leber, News Report: A recent example may include Best Buy, which offered its new CEO a three-year compensation package of $32 million, after laying off 2,400 employees this summer. A company spokes woman defended CEO Hubert Joly's pay as "in-line with best practice for Fortune 50 companies," and "is squarely in the mid-range for a CEO of a company the size of Best Buy." "It's a false paradox,," study co-author Elson told the New York Times. 
Sam Pizzigati, Op-Ed: The basic conclusion from these findings: Forbes is spinning "a misleading tale of what it takes to become wealthy in America." Most of the Forbes 400 have benefited from a level of privilege unknown to the vast majority of Americans. In effect, as commentator Jim Hightower has aptly been noting for years, most of our super rich were born on third base and think they hit a triple. 
Heidi Hutner, Op-Ed: Future generations deserve safe wombs and breast milk, and clean air, water, and soil. They deserve a livable climate and healthy, non-genetically modified food. Future generations—including rivers, oceans, mountains, forests, deserts, and the innumerable species—deserve to live as they have for centuries. These are basic rights, and yet our children, and all beings, are losing them. --
